Speed cameras get set to snap

THE Princes Highway and Healesville-Kooweerup Road will soon be home to seven new speed camera sites in Cardinia.
The Gazette can exclusively reveal the locations of the mobile cameras approved on 10 September.
Sergeant Nigel Atkins, head of Cardinia’s Traffic Management Unit, said there would be four sites in Officer, two in Pakenham and one in Pakenham South.
The new additions, to be up and running very soon, will bring the number of mobile safety camera sites in Cardinia to 28.
Sgt Atkins said police selected the sites because they were carriageways that had a crash history and where motorists ignored the speed limit.
He predicted the cameras would catch many motorists out.
“A safety camera doesn’t sit out on the road and come back with zero detections,” Sgt Atkins said.
It took less than eight hours for a camera to clock 395 speedsters on Kooweerup-Healesville Road on 1 September.
It assessed 7305 drivers between 6.15am and 3pm, near the Pakenham Bypass off-ramp, recording a strike rate of five per cent.
Sgt Atkins said people seemed to be oblivious to the 60km/h signs on that section of road.
“It’s clearly indicated as a 60km/h zone,” he said.
“We had identified that area as having a speed-related issue and placing the camera there has confirmed it.”
Sgt Atkins warned motorists that there was more safety camera sites to come.
“It assists us in our enforcement and road safety strategies,” he said.
Sgt Atkins urged motorists to take more notice of speed signs as police prepared to utilise the new mobile camera sites.
“They’re not optional extras – they’re there for a reason,” he said. “Don’t become a victim of our new speed sites.”
