BERWICK business stalwarts Kay and Jim Drysdale, of Drysdale’s Jewellery, were made life-members of the Berwick Village Chamber of Commerce last week.
Kay Drysdale said both she and Jim, who have served 25 years on the chamber, were taken by surprise when told at the chamber’s annual general meeting last month that they would be receiving the honour.
Former chamber president John Seymour presented the couple with the award at the chamber’s monthly meeting last Monday.
Only five others have been awarded life memberships in the past 60 years. The honour roll includes Gordon Blackburne, Norma McCausland, Ellis Loverage, John Seymour and Wendy Ward.
“We started the business in February ’84, and moved here to live August ’88. Most businesses in Berwick were fairly active in the chamber at the time, and all worked together as a community,” Mrs Drysdale said.
“It’s gone up and down in numbers over the years, but we are still debating rubbish and car parking.”
Mrs Drysdale said the couple had met “lots of nice people” through the chamber and planned to stay on until they retired from their business.
The life membership certificate is currently on display within Drysdale’s Berwick Village Jewellery, in Blackburne Square.
