RETAIL giant Woolworths is coming to Pakenham’s Lakeside estate.
Construction of the store is expected to begin late next year, with it to be open for trading in 2012.
The supermarket will be part of the new Lakeside Square Activity Centre commercial and retail precinct, which will be built opposite Cardinia Road Railway Station.
The railway station is also set to open in 2012.
The Woolworths supermarket will comprise of 5,000m2 of retail space.
It will have up to 300 carparks.
Jack Mitchell, chair of the Lakeside community development forum, said it was an exciting time for the estate.
“Coles and Aldi are so close to us, but by the time it opens there will be 1000 residents in all probability on that side of the railway line,” he said.
Mr Mitchell said he expected the Lakeside Square Activity Centre would also feature a cafe and bakery and other specialty shops.
He said residents were now rallying to bring a post office and a doctor’s surgery to the estate.
Lakeside Pakenham Project Director Sharon Coates said Pakenham Lakeside’s $30 million retail and commercial shopping and dining precinct and a $7 million cultural centre would create more than 3600 jobs when complete in 2012.
