SHOES are the staple of most girls’ wardrobes and now teachers at St Patrick’s Primary School are looking to add to their collection for a good cause.
The school’s large female teaching contingent – and a few male teachers – will throw an in-house shoe party after school next Tuesday to raise funds for the Cancer Council.
Grade 5/6 teacher Gemma Jess said the gathering was a novel way to take part in Girls Night In, a fundraising initiative of the Cancer Council Australia.
Ms Jess said many of the teaching team at the school had their own encounters with cancer. She said some had experienced it first-hand while others knew of people who had suffered from the disease.
“Many of us have experienced someone suffering from cancer, and we’ve had a few cases on staff where people have come through it and are now fighting fit,” Ms Jess said.
The Laura Benini Shoe party will feature a selection of summer shoes, which staff members can try on before they buy.
Ms Jess said cancer fundraisers at the school usually raised about $300, and was hoping that the target would again be reached.
Funds raised for Girls Night In, held throughout October, help the 15,700 women who are diagnosed with breast and gynaecological cancers each year.
Women register as Girls Night In hosts and then invite their female friends, workmates and family to get together for an evening of fun. Guests are asked to donate the equivalent of what they would have spent on a night out.
