Price spread as buyers return

AS EXPECTED there was a much larger yarding of cattle offered at VLE Pakenham this week, which included a number of pens of heavier steers.
The overall quality of the yarding was of good to very good quality and there was a good selection of vealers offered.
With the supply of cattle dwindling in New South Wales, and prices lifting in that state, some buyers returned to this market.
Couple this extra competition with some very mixed demand and a large contradiction was seen in price trends.
It was best to say that some prices were three cents to seven cents dearer and others were firm to seven cents per kilogram cheaper.
One sale assisted in keeping the top price unchanged but most of the very good quality vealers averaged three cents cheaper, making between 182 cents and 205 cents per kilogram. However, demand was stronger for good quality, lighter weight vealers, and C muscle calves made between 165 cents and 191 cents per kilogram.
Away from those good quality calves, there were a lot of sales of reasonable to good quality C and D muscle vealers that only made from 132 cents to 168 cents per kilogram.
Some very good quality yearlings were penned, which included several pens of supplementary fed cattle.
Demand varied a lot depending on the weight of the cattle and they did not have to be too heavy to achieve lower prices.
Light to medium weight steers made from 145 cents to 175 cents with the best quality B muscle steers to 188 cents per kilogram.
Heavier steers made from 152 cents to 164 cents, and grown steers only made up to 159 cents per kilogram. A lot of good quality heifers made between 140 cents and 158 cents with some sales of supplementary fed cattle to 175 cents per kilogram.
Plainer shape, and plainer condition heifers made from 103 cents to 145 cents per kilogram.
