Numbers up

NUMBERS swelled further with a lift of around 17 per cent recorded at VLE Pakenham, and the yarding was mostly of good to very good quality.
The larger supply included a few pens of grown steers and heifers as well as many very good quality vealers and yearlings. The competition was unchanged, but demand was again weaker, which saw most cattle sell at rates between three cents and nine cents per kilogram cheaper. However, demand was very poor for the best quality vealers, and with the exception of very few cattle, these sold at rates up to 20 cents per kilogram cheaper.
There was a much larger selection of 500 vealers penned, including a lot of good to very good quality B and C muscle calves.
The best quality B muscle vealers suffered the most under poor demand, and made mostly from 172 cents to 185 cents with isolated sales up to 197 cents per kilogram. Good quality C muscle two and three score vealers made from 142 cents to 175 cents per kilogram.
The penning of 680 yearling steers and heifers suffered further price cuts with many two, three and four score yearling steers making from 144 cents to 170 cents per kilogram. Several sales of very good quality B muscle steers made to 172 cents per kilogram with some being of excellent quality having been supplementary fed. Yearling heifers made mostly between 130 cents and 156 cents with supplementary fed B muscle heifers to 173 cents per kilogram.
Demand was also softer for the reasonable size penning of 140 good quality grown steers and heifers. Steers made from 140 cents to 157 cents and were from four cents to nine cents per kilogram cheaper. Grown heifers sold poorly, only making from 106 to 136 cents per kilogram.
