30 years to 1981:
STAFF and students at the Pakenham Consolidated School farewelled Bert Halligan, the caretaker of the infant section of the school, after he provided eight years of dedicated service. Everyone wished him well on his retirement.
A Theatre party of 50 people from St Margaret’s in Berwick attended a production of a hard hitting play, ‘The Comedians’ inside Pentridge prison. The attendees had the chance to speak to the prisoners after the performance.
20 years to 1991:
POLICE and Emergency Services Minister Mal Sandon officially opened Emerald’s new $436,000 police station. The station was to service more than 13,000 people and provide the district with a full 24 hour service.
THERE was a huge crowd at Pakenham Hall to see the end of the reign of 1990 Yakkerboo Queen Tara Crawley and the crowning of a new queen, Anthea Wenn of Pakenham Upper. The 17-year-old apprentice hairdresser was chosen from 13 princesses.
10 years to 2001:
STUDENTS at Columba Catholic Primary School marched from their old school site in Iona to their new $1.1 million school in Hope Streeet, Bunyip. The march was to mark the opening of their new school, with students holding the school banner.
VOLUNTEERS from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Rotary Clubs of Berwick, Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills collected $8300 for Red Cross Calling. Casey Red Cross Calling chairman Cr Norma McCausland thanked everyone who gave their time.
Five years to 2006:
GEMBROOK’S Genseric Parker was honoured as Victoria’s longest serving rainfall collector, who has taken note of every drizzle, downpour, winter deluge and summer shower for more than 50 years. The 91-year-old received recognition at a function hosted by Melbourne Water.
HARKAWAY Primary School celebrated the Melbourne Commonwealth Games by holding a special sports event. Fourteen countries were represented and the students competed in a range of fun activities including cycling on tricycles and swimming on scooter boards.
