THEY may be the fairer sex, but they are also going to be the faster sex at Drouin on Sunday, when the quickest women from Drouin Speedway match their speed and skills against Victoria’s best in the annual Ladies Standard Saloon Championship.
One determined woman will go home as the state’s No. 1.
The ground-pounding SDAV Hot Rods are also on the program, in a round of their Thunder Down Under series.
In the state championship, reigning champion, Sarah Meakins from Alexandra, will be out to defend her crown. However, Sonia Nelson, a member of Drouin and Alexandra Speedways, has been in winning form, winning at both tracks.
Other drivers sure to trouble the two favourites include Rosedale’s Kelly McDermott and Sheena Bishop, Kellie Garlick and Mary-Anne Lowe from Alexandra, and Debbie Donaldson, Tegan Bullard and Anne Gooding, all from Drouin.
In Hot Rods, Maryknoll’s Dean West is champing at the bit to race at his home track against the likes of Kali and Ron Hovey and Phil Jenkins. The V8 machines have become a firm favourite at Drouin in recent years, with a couple of annual appearances each season. Supporting categories include Open Standard Saloons, VSC Open Sedans and Junior Standards.
The action starts at 11am, with gates opening at 8.30am.
The cost is $15 for adults, $40 for a family of two adults and two children aged between 12 and 16, $10 for aged and invalid pensioners and 12 to 16-year-olds, while children under 12 accompanied by an adult are admitted free.
