A SMALLER yarding and wet conditions greeted buyers and agents last Wednesday at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, but this had little effect on prices as demand continues to dictate.
Good quality vealers sold strongly and raised the top price two cents to 274.6 for processor veal and restockers paid to 277.6. A smaller number of lighter quality head did manage to cause a reduction in the average price as it slipped 14 cents to 227.5, but overall vealers remained firm on recent sales.
Bullocks gained six cents to average 205.4. Weights and condition were firmer with the top also rising two cents to 217.
Heifers were also popular with restockers, as the lighter quality had processors holding back a little, except for the heavier better head as the top was 245 cents, the average was lighter at 191.7.
Steers remained firm this sale with the average remaining steady at 207.1. Quality was on par with last sale and the top steer made to 236.6.
A larger proportion of dairy cows and fewer beef cows saw a minor reduction in the average on Thursday. Quality was good in the top end of both, although the lighter end saw condition lacking and this pulled the price back in this area. Cows averaged six cents easier at 150 cents and the top was two cents off at 192.2.
A similar size yarding of 37 bulls this week saw improved quality and this lifted the average by eight cents to 181.3 and the top price rose six cents to 212.2.
There will only be one sale this week on Wednesday 20 April – no Thursday sale.
The draw for Wednesday 20 April is as follows: 1, SEJ; 2, Scotts; 3, Landmark; 4, Gibbon; 5, Elders.
