APPRENTICE jockey Travis Harrison – who lost his life in a car accident 15 years ago – was honoured recently at the Cranbourne racecourse.
The 15th Travis Harrison Apprentices Cup was run at the track that has been “home” for generations of the Harrison family. It was won by Ibrahim Gundogdu, aboard the Fran Houlahan and Brian Johnston trained Torrefy.
Travis Harrison died in a crash on May 12, 1996. He rode 88 winners, including 28 in the metropolitan area.
Kevin Harrison, Travis’s dad, was a jockey before becoming a trainer. And his dad, Tom, was a training legend at Cranbourne.
Meanwhile, at Pakenham the prior Monday, the Cranbourne trained Triple Tease did just that in beating his rivals to win the Devine Lifestyle Maiden Plate.
Triple Tease, third on his home track at his only previous start, was prepared by Michael Kent and was ridden by Brad Rawiller.
Runner-up was Another Excuse – and that’s something maybe rival jockeys, or trainers, were looking for after taking on Triple Tease.
