Stiff competition as numbers rise

AFTER the lighter pre-Easter yarding, this week saw 830 head for the Wednesday Fat Cattle Sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul.
Categories had a mixed reaction, mainly due to numbers as larger yardings of bullocks and steers eased the pressure on competition and resulted in lighter prices, which slipped the average six cents for both categories.
Similar numbers for the heifers and vealers saw better competition and this lifted the average by three to four cents.
One hundred and seventy bullocks eased six cents to 199.2, with the top at 210.6 in comparison to 220.6 pre-Easter. Quality was similar with good heavy weights.
Two hundred and twenty two steers were six cents back with the top 20 cents easier at 228.6, and heavier weights saw the steer per head price rise $40 to $1027.
Sixty seven heifers recorded a rise of three cents on average to 194, and the top price also rose three cents to 220. Similar weights and condition ensured good sales.
Three hundred and sixty nine veal of very good quality saw a four-cent increase in the average to 231.5, with a six-cent increase in the best price to 275 cents.
On Thursday, similar numbers were penned with 20 bulls and 424 cows, and the condition was slightly easier especially in the lighter dairy side. The 20 bulls came up 12 cents short of the last sales top to record 200 cents, the average was 18 cents easier at 163, but heavier weights saw a per head price only $60 shy on last sale at $1134.
Four hundred and twenty four cows could not reach the previous top of 192.2, but managed a good sale topping at 178.6, a higher percentage of lighter-sized cows eased the average 13 cents to 137, with heavy-shaped cattle still selling to strong demand.
