Restockers push prices

A LARGE increase in supply at VLE Pakenham met with some very strong restocker competition, and this conflict with the usual buyers created some higher prices.
Away from this prices were mostly unchanged to six cents per kilogram cheaper with the heavier steers and bullocks most affected.
Some other grown cattle were also a little cheaper.
Generally the quality of the yarding was good to very good with some excellent quality seen at the top end of the vealers, and some supplementary fed yearlings.
Competition from the trade was unchanged, but mostly at the reduced rates.
The highest price of 264 cents per kilogram was paid for some supplementary fed yearling heifers, and the best vealers made to 261 cents per kilogram.
Because of some very strong restocker and feedlot activity some vealers were up to nine cents per kilogram dearer.
Overall vealers to the trade were mostly from 195 cents to 245 cents, and those to feed-on were between 185 cents and 245 cents per kilogram.
Away from those supplementary fed yearlings most made between 185 cents and 215 cents, with a number of plainer D muscle steers and heifers from 165 cents to 192 cents per kilogram.
A good percentage of the yarding were heavy yearling steers and bullocks, which sold to good competition, but at prices averaging four cents per kilogram lower.
The yearling steers, mouthed 0 to 2 teeth, made from 183 cents to 205 cents per kilogram.
Prime C muscle bullocks made between 179 cents and 190 cents with some medium weight bullocks to 197 cents per kilogram.
Also sold were several pens of manufacturing bullocks from 168 cents to 185 cents per kilogram.
