Hasell tree

By Danielle Galvin
THERE’S a new tree in town.
The Federation Bell Tree was unveiled at the official opening of the Pakenham Hall and multi-purpose centre.
Although most of the action is inside, residents walking by seem to be intrigued by the unusual art installation.
Dr Anton Hasell is the artist who designed the tree.
“I haven’t heard much reaction yet, but I’ve seen people walking by looking at it trying to figure it out,” he said.
Dr Hasell expects some interest when residents become accustomed to it.
“Hopefully, people enjoy it,” he said.
The tree stands at 5.5 metres and is coated in a teal green to enhance the bright signage at the community hub.
Dr Hasell wanted the artwork painted in an earthy tone to suit the landscape of the Pakenham site.
“There are a lot of trees here, and I wanted it to match with them,” he said.
The artist was also the creator of the Federation Bells carillon at Birrarung Marr in Melbourne.
He hopes the tree will be a meeting place for residents and a point of reference for anyone not from the area.
“I hope people enjoy it and it helps them to find their way to the new building.”
Rebecca Black is the arts officer from Cardinia Shire. She says she’s heard the bronze bells chiming on a windy day.
“I’ve heard them chiming, but it’s very soft,” she said.
