‘Awesome’ cross country win

FIVE Kooweerup Secondary College students took out the state championships in their age bracket at the cross country finals last week.
It was the first ever win for the school at a state level in cross country and the Year 7 boys, Nathan Voss, Tom Close, Josh Weaver, Brandon Bates and Abel Miftode were very pleased with their achievement.
The three-kilometre run saw more than 100 participants representing 12 schools from each region compete for the coveted title.
Kooweerup beat second placegetter Maribyrnong College, a well-known sports academy, by a mere 20 points in the 13 Years section, finishing at 124 points.
Coach and school teacher Gerard Burke said the nerves were apparent in everyone, particularly when they realised the boys could potentially take out first place.
“We knew it was going to be a close one,” Mr Burke said.
“The boys were very nervous before the start and very determined during the race. We were hopeful that we would take out the state champs.”
The boys are still basking in the glory of their win and will be displaying their medals at home.
“It was awesome,” they said.
