Vealer quality leads the rise

GOOD quality among vealers last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, saw the top price rise to 273.2 cents per kilogram, which was eight cents up on last sale.
Overall the yarding contained fair to good quality in all areas. Demand was slightly easier in some areas, with the lighter end for bullocks and steers easing their average.
Fifty seven bullocks slipped two cents to 176.9 cents with the top two cents lighter at 190 cents.
Sixty three steers also back two cents to 180.6 cents. Weights were similar to last sale with the per head price relevant to the average, back $9 to $851. Steers made to 209.6 cents.
One hundred and ninety seven veal gained two cents on average to 211.1 cents and $33 per head to $719, and as mentioned the top was 273.2 cents.
Sixty-three heifers topped at 229 cents, gaining 19 cents on last week, with a slightly easier average.
This week the yard average was seven cents easier at 186.2 cents, and the per head price was $10 back at $780.
A larger yarding of 21 bulls on Thursday saw good averages and top price.
The average was 21 cents up at 163.1 cents and the best price was 19 cents better at 179.6 cents.
Three hundred and seventy three cows lifted two cents on average to 136.6 cents and the top was three cents up at 169.2 cents.
Considering there were less beef cows and more dairy types the sale was regarded as firm to stronger.
