HE DOESN’T get paid. He doesn’t get any benefits. Scott Memery does what he does out of love for the two Fs – footy and photos.
If you don’t know who Memery is, scroll through any footy liftout from this year’s Gazettes and one of his photos is bound to feature prominently in the Casey Cardinia section.
Memery, a self-taught photographer, can be seen at any Devon Meadows game. Whether it be playing for his beloved Panthers in the reserves, or taking photos of the seniors and juniors, Memery and his Canon have become almost iconic at Devon Meadows games.
“I love what I do,” Memery said.
“I borrowed my brother’s camera once when he went away and I started taking a few happy snaps. A few people said I was good at it, so I kept going.
“Devon Meadows asked me to take some photos of their games about seven years ago and that’s when I was introduced to Tangles (Brad Kingsbury) and he asked me to send in some stuff to the Gazette and I’ve been doing that since.
“It’s just about trial and error.
“I’ve never had anyone teach me or done any course, but it’s a passion and I’ve had professionals give me advice on how to be better.”
Unfortunately, a computer error destroyed six years of recorded photos, leaving all of his best work confined to, well, Memery’s memory.
“I wasn’t impressed,” Memery said.
“I had some good photos on there, including (Pakenham’s) Sean Gramc breaking his ankle.
“My best shot was in a junior grand final when the kid attempted a kick, but it burst the ball.
“You could literally see the seams breaking … that was a pretty good shot.”
