AT PAKENHAM VLE there was a definite cheaper trend for a large percentage of the cattle sold with competition, or the lack of it, affecting the outcome.
Some cattle, mostly high quality supplementary fed yearlings, sold at unchanged rates with prices for others equal to nine cents per kilogram cheaper.
However, the quality of the vealers and yearlings penned was not up to the previous week’s standard and this added to the fall in price averages at times with some averages being up to 13 cents per kilogram lower.
There were 180 vealers penned, and the best quality made to 260 cents per kilogram. Most sales were between 185 cents and 245 cents per kilogram.
However, another consignment of the high quality supplementary fed yearlings were sold, and attained the same price as last week, making between 248 cents and 270 cents per kilogram liveweight.
Throughout the yarding of 500 yearlings were several pens of other supplementary fed steers and heifers that varied greatly in weight and quality.
Prices ranged from 195 cents to 245 cents per kilogram for these.
A number of grass fattened yearlings were penned and included a lot of heavier steers and heifers.
The steer portion made from 182 cents to 192 cents, and heifers between 163 cents and 202 cents per kilogram.
Due to the plainer quality offered, a number of sales were noted from 142 cents to 178 cents per kilogram.
Around 250 grown cattle were penned with most being bullocks. Prices here were equal to four cents easier, driven mostly by quality variations.
Prime C muscle bullocks made from 178 cents to 189.2 cents, and grown steers to 192.6 cents per kilogram.
Plainer condition steers made from 158 cents to 178 cents, and heifers, mostly 155 cents to 179 cents per kilogram.
