Council officers to tackle litter

THE Bass Coast Shire Council will receive funding to employ a dedicated litter prevention officer. In an initiative by the government, more than $1 million in funding has been given for nine officers in various councils across Victoria. The officers will develop and implement highly targeted programs that are designed to minimise litter in their area.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said the money would make a valuable contribution toward reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.
The councils will be issuing fines and direct enforcement, patrolling known rubbish hot spots and educating business and the wider community on best practice waste disposal.
