A STATE record of 285.2 cents per kilogram was paid for a magnificent 380 kilogram Blue vealer, bred and sold by B. and H. Arbuthnot of Glengarry West on Wednesday last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul.
These strong prices saw a large proportion of the veal market remain in the 250 cents to 270 cents bracket, with a much smaller yarding of 226 head, and no reduction in demand.
All categories recorded good gains and competition was strong with restockers among the usual contingent of buyers.
One hundred and forty vealers were penned with the average lifting 19 cents to 227.2.
Quality was good to excellent with that top of 285.2 cents which was 20 cents up on last week.
Eighteen bullocks sold strongly topping at 198.6 cents, up four cents and averaging five cents better at 192.7 cents.
Twelve heifers made to 200.2 cents and averaged 180.1 cents, which was eight cents up on the Fat Sale last week and 24 steers rose three cents on average to 189.5 cents and made to a top of 206.6 cents.
The upward movement in prices carried on through to Thursday as gains were made in all categories.
Eleven bulls averaged 152 cents and the top bull made to 173.6 cents, slightly higher than last sale.
Fourteen bullocks made to 194 cents to average 192.9 cents. Good heavy weights and condition saw for strong demand.
