FIRST time cyclists Jessica Chapman and Eden Rowe have taken out the Schools Mountain Bike and Orienteering State Championships in the open girls pairs section.
The girls from Kooweerup Secondary College competed at the Woodlands Historic Park in Greenvale in the annual competition for keen cyclists.
Coach Celia Massie-Bertei said the girls won the championships in record time.
“There are check points worth different values, and they have two hours to find the check points. The girls ended up coming back early,” she said.
The girls competed in the seniors section of the competition.
Neither of the two champs have competed in a cycling tournament previously.
“They had to borrow bikes. They’re both very fit. One is a dancer and the other is a netballer, but they’ve never been that interested in cycling.”
Four other students from the college competed in the tournament, alongside more than 180 young cyclists who competed in the event.
Ms Massie-Bertei said the girls would be coming back next year.
“They told me they want to defend their title next year, and there’s a summer series that they want to enter into,” she said.
