Supply falls as yard rises

DESPITE the good price increases seen the previous week, supply this week at VLE Pakenham fell by 12 per cent.
While there were some very good quality cattle penned in most classes of young and grown cattle, it included a few more plainer condition cattle.
All of last week’s buyers returned, and demand was again very strong.
Price averages were all over the shop, but the general trend was dearer by two cents to five cents per kilogram.
Some of this was created by lesser quality for prices that were similar to the previous week.
Prices for some of the yearling heifers were lower on average, but for the processor there will be no change at the abattoir.
The best quality vealers made to 280 cents, but the feature of the 185 head sold was that most made from 220 cents to 268 cents per kilogram.
The penning of 215 yearling steers and 140 heifers included some supplementary fed, although the percentage compared to grass fattened was less.
These supplementary fed cattle made from 220 cents to 277 cents, and most of the grass fattened steers made from 210 cents to 235 cents for steers, and 195 cents to 220 cents per kilogram for heifers.
Plainer condition yearlings made between 158 cents and 200 cents per kilogram with most of these purchased to feed on.
Approximately 190 grown cattle were penned, and most were steers.
The quality varied, which created mixed averages, but the good quality C muscle bullocks made from 185 cents to 200 cents, and steers to 203 cents per kilogram.
Manufacturing grades sold from 158 cents to 189 cents per kilogram. Grown heifers varied greatly in fat cover and weight, and made anywhere between 160 cents to 192 cents per kilogram.
