TEAMWORK was the name of the game on Saturday as the Holden Scramble returned to Drouin and a capacity field turned out to support one of the most popular events on the calendar.
The weather was perfect and the pins cut friendly, which meant a barrage of birdies was required to secure one of the two qualifying spots available.
Thirty teams teed off, including many visitors, and it was a visiting team that shot the lights out to secure the winning score.
The team from Pakenham – Dave Scott, Aaron Richards, Scott Taylor and Brad Watts – scorched around the Drouin layout with a gross score of 65 and a 54.75 nett.
But the locals weren’t to be upstaged with a Drouin team consisting of Darren Adams, Fraser Duncan, Grant Duncan and Ryan Williams also shooting a 65, coming in with a nett score of 56. In third spot were Leon Cook, Harry Matthews, Stephen Bethune and Simon Vigilante with a gross 62 and 56.75 nett.
Nearest the pins were Brad Bennett (14th), Shane Dwyer (17th), Craig Armstrong (19th) and Ray Robertson (23rd).
The overflow event on Saturday saw 49 competitors battle it out for stableford bragging rights. There was only one grade because of lower numbers and the winner was Barry Beechey (20) with 40 points. Runner-up was Con Norris with 39 from Barry Dyson and Bob Ross on 38. Balls down the line went to 37 on a countback.
A field of 87 players enjoyed a stableford round last Wednesday. A Grade winner was Dave Ferguson (3) with 37 points on countback from Bob Simpson.
B Grade winner was Rob Woodward (23) from Bob Ramage, both scoring 36. Merv Peel (32) continued his recent winning form, taking out C Grade with 42 from Peter Brown 41. Max Johnson was next with 40 followed by Ray Cropley 38.
Balls down the line went to 36 on a countback. Nearest the pins were Mike Hall (14th), Ken Cooper (17th), Lea Caldwell (19th) and Wayne Duckett (23rd and pro pin). This Saturday is the September monthly medal.
