Prices vary in a mixed up market

THE market at VLE Pakenham was mixed in quality, mixed in breeding and mixed in weight. It was also mixed in prices.
Due mostly to the large variation in quality price trends were varied.
Very strong demand for vealers and lighter weight yearlings saw these sell to dearer trends, while softer demand for heavy cattle saw these sell at rates equal to four cents per kilogram cheaper.
All buyers were present and active including one supermarket, however, the high prices gave feedlots little opportunity to buy big numbers.
A new state, and possibly Australia wide, record price was set for vealers, for the weight sold.
Due to the very small supply of top quality vealers, by the end of the sale a few pens of vealers weighing 320 kilograms to 400 kilograms liveweight sold from 265 cents to 287.6 cents with a few sales over 280 kilograms.
Of the 165 penned, most others made between 210 cents and 265 cents per kilogram.
This strong demand was also seen for the lighter weight yearlings with supplementary fed cattle making to 268 cents per kilogram.
Grass fattened yearlings made to 238 cents for steers and 235 cents for heifers with many sales for both sexes between 198 cents and 220 cents per kilogram.
There were 320 yearlings penned, and once the weights lifted, prices fell to see most heavier steers make from 190 cents to 198 cents per kilogram.
Similar weighted heifers made between 165 cents and 185 cents per kilogram including older heifers.
Grown cattle were in reasonable supply with most being steers and bullocks.
Prime C muscle bullocks made between 185 cents and 196 cents, and the steers failed to make over 195 cents per kilogram but the quality was not quite as good this week.
Manufacturing bullocks made from 155 cents to 185 cents per kilogram.
