Big Brother eyes cars

UNLICENSED drivers are among some of the offenders police from the Cardinia Shire will be targeting in the next few months.
The operation, which will go until Christmas, involves automatic number plate recognition systems, which allow police to swiftly catch offending drivers while not having to pull aside every vehicle.
The system scans the registration plate of all passing vehicles and alerts operators when an unauthorised driver is identified and police are notified immediately.
Officers from the Bunyip, Kooweerup, Emerald and Pakenham police stations were on the Princes Highway in Tynong yesterday to catch offending drivers.
Six police vehicles were parked near the road, including marked and unmarked cars, as well as highway patrol vehicles.
Anyone driving an unregistered, stolen or uninsured vehicle and those with outstanding warrants will also be caught.
Police advise people to pay their registration and licence fees and fix up any outstanding warrants as soon as possible to avoid getting even more fines.
