ANSWERING arithmetic, division and other maths questions under pressure would make most adults nervous, but more than 240,000 youngsters across the country competed in an online mathetics competition last week.
Sixteen-year-old Tatiana Devendranath from Haileybury College in Berwick has competed in the Australian Maths Challenge for the past four years.
The online mathletics competition attracts students, with a range of abilities and interests, from all over Australia.
“The idea is to answer as many questions in sixty seconds as you can,” she said.
Tatiana modestly descri-bes her maths ability as above average.
Instead, she’s hoping to pursue a career in writing when she finishes Year 12.
“I want to study media and communications when I leave school,” she said.
Last year, the competition attracted more than 250,000 students from around Australia.
As the Victorian ambassador for the maths challenge, Tatiana has been promoting the competition at her school and trying to get her friends involved.
“It’s fun and it’s just a mental thing. It’s very competitive and speed is important,” she said.
More than 3800 schools competed in the Australian Maths Challenge.
