GARFIELD’S women golfers travelled to Berwick/Montuna last week to play the inaugural Ladies Challenge.
Vikki Templeton donated the shield but Garfield will have to wait at least 12 months to have its name inscribed as Berwick/Montuna won the day.
The magnificent condition of the Garfield golf course contributed to the high Stableford scores in Saturday’s event.
Best score for the day over all grades was B Grade’s David Lawler (19) with 44. A Grade winner was Shane Szybkowski (13) with 41, and in C Grade Trevor Marsham (31) won with 42.
Nearest the pins: Mark Kelly (fourth), Terry Webster (eighth), Richard Perry (ninth), Terry Webster (11th), Cameron Bell (14th) and David Lawler (16th).
Nearest second shots went to Andrew Patton (fifth) and Grant McLure (seventh).
Down the line balls went to T. Franklin 43, S. Fordham 42, D. Raines, P. Johnson, D. Kerr, R. Duncan and N. Currie 41, M. Kelly, H. Huyskens and A. King 40.
Women’s competition winner was G. Franklin (36) with 44. The raffle went to P. Skinner.

The day’s event was a Stableford for the men. Over the past three weeks a 54-hole handicap event has been played and won by Neil Currie – the most senior player in the field showing the younger guns how it was done.
Runner-up was Ray Jones, whose first two rounds of 41 and 48 had him favoured at the start of the final round but he couldn’t quite get over the line.
Day event winners were Jason Ridler (24) with 41 and Peter Skinner (16) runner-up with 40. Down the line balls went to Neil Currie 40, Grant McKay 39 and Mark Kelly 37.
Nearest the pins were T. Franklin (fourth), J. Ridler (eighth), N. Needham (ninth), B. Tindall (11th), P. Skinner (14th) and C. Barnes (16th).
