Lowe’s killer to appeal sentence

CAMERON Lowe’s killer will appeal his sentence.
In August, the teen (who cannot be named for legal reasons) pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mr Lowe and recklessly causing injury to another youth he punched unconscious a week before the fatal assault.
He was sentenced to a maximum of six years in jail with a four-year minimum term.
Mr Lowe’s mother, Rikki Arney, contacted the Gazette on Monday after being contacted by Homicide Squad officers who told her the news.
She was obviously upset by the appeal.
At the time of the sentencing, Ms Arney said she felt the legal system had let her down.
“He gets four years and we get a life sentence,” she said.
“We’re happier it wasn’t three years in youth detention, but we still feel the court system doesn’t hold much value for a life.
“Especially if he ends up only serving four years.”
Ms Arney said she was glad her son’s killer was no longer out on the streets and said she hoped the whole incident would teach a lesson to the youth of Pakenham that “thuggish behaviour won’t be tolerated.”.
Ms Arney said she hoped that one day the legal system would take a hard-line approach to unprovoked, alcohol- fuelled violence.
She said she and her childrencould move to Queensland to start a new life.
But while that fresh start was on the cards for Ms Arney and her children, it could very well be on hold now.
