Buyers scoop up the supply of quality

A FURTHER increase in supply saw more heavy steers and bullocks penned at VLE Pakenham, which were mostly of good to very good quality but some were extra heavy.
The balance of the yarding gave buyers the opportunity to purchase some very good quality but equally there was a number of plainer condition cattle sold.
The competition was unchanged but demand was weaker and most cattle sold at cheaper rates.
There were 265 vealers penned and while some of the lighter weight vealers sold at unchanged rates of 212 cents to 235 cents, other vealers were two cents to eight cents per kilogram cheaper.
The best quality B muscle vealers sold to 245 cents while most made between 195 cents and 230 cents per kilogram.
Of the 525 yearlings penned at least 20 per cent were heavy and extra heavy steers mouthed 0 to 2 teeth.
Poor demand saw these sell seven cents to 11 cents per kilogram cheaper, making from 180 cents to 196 cents per kilogram.
Other steers sold mostly between 188 cents and 218 cents per kilogram.
Heifers met with a more uneven trend, being anywhere between two cents and 14 cents per kilogram cheaper with fat cover playing a large part in buyers offers.
Prices for the best quality heifers were from 195 cents to 218 cents, but others sold between 142 cents and 193 cents per kilogram.
There was around 680 grown cattle penned, and a large percentage were prime bullocks in four and five score condition.
Prices were seven cents to 11 cents cheaper which saw most make from 172 cents to 192 cents but few made over 188 cents per kilogram.
Manufacturing steers made from 154 cents to 183 cents, and a lot of these were extra heavy bullocks weighing up to and over 800 kilograms liveweight, and in five and six score condition.
Grown heifers sold to 172 cents for very good quality but most of these, plus a few cows, sold between 133 cents and 162 cents per kilogram.
