PAKENHAM’s first round of this year’s Club Championships were finally completed on Saturday after torrential rain washed away the first attempt a week earlier.
There were nervous looks skyward this week as more dark clouds circled but the course and players both held up well, although both finished wet.
The November Monthly Medal was also up for grabs and it was B Grade’s Max Craig (19) who handled the conditions brilliantly to card a nett 62 and collect the medal.
Troy Whittaker (9) overcame some recent poor form to win A Grade with a nett 71 on a count back while Matthew Hogan (27) won C Grade with a nett 69.
The best scratch score for the day was 74 which went to Kevin Booker who is ineligible to compete in the clubbies due to his professional status.
Nearest the pins went to Michael Hildebrand (second), David Nagel (fifth), Matt Ahern (eighth), Peter Buff (14th) and Bryan Delaney on the 16th. Closest second shots went to Kevin Booker on the third and Steve Osborne on the 11th.
Club Captain Clint Walker bombed his ball 290 metres down the 18th to win the A Grade longest drive while Geoff Percival and Mark Stewart won B and C Grade respectively. The Super Competition place getters were Max Craig, Peter Porter and Colin Maclean.
The top five in each grade heading into this week’s second round are as follows:
A Grade: 75–Clint Walker, Scott Milnes, Robert Bumbak; 80–Troy Whittaker, Trevor Male.
B Grade: 81–Max Craig, Peter Porter; 82–Colin Maclean; 85-Michael Hildebrand; 86-Michael Barth.
C Grade: 95-Dylan Jack-Murphy, Kevin McCrae, Ross Stewart, Alex Green, Grant McCullough, Graeme Steel.

@BT Sub Sport Gaz:LADIES
It was hard for the Ladies of Pakenham to stop smiling on Thursday as beautiful weather and a perfect golf course greeted players for the second round of the 4BBB Challenge.
Some excellent scores came rolling in but none could match the mother and daughter pairing of Helen Aurish and Leanne Barker who scored 51 points to win the day. Hot on their heels were Liz Garvey and Marg Andrews on 50 points.
Garvey and Andrews added that score to their first round 49 points to resoundingly win the two day challenge.
Other winners on the day were Dini Krytenberg and Kay Jones with 46 points while Jan Creagh and the in-form Yvonne Tisdale came in with 45 points. Nearest the pins went to Helen Aurish, Sue Menzel and Yvonne Tisdale.
This week is Hartball played in teams of four and next week is the Brett Ogle Trophy Day played at Drouin. Thursday 15 December is Christmas lunch and presentation day.
@BT Sub Sport Gaz:JUNIORS
Junior Pennant returned to the Pakenham Golf Club on Sunday and it was the local boys who played too well for the visiting Cardinia Beaconhills team.
After a week off for the Presidents Cup it would have been easy for the boys to be a bit rusty but they came out firing winning 4 ½ to 1½.
Team manager Ray Leonard and fill-in manager Tommy Cassidy have done a fantastic job with the team, many of whom are experiencing their first test in the challenges of match-play golf.
This was a real team effort but special mention must go to Brodie Pintar, who won his match 4 and 3. Pintar’s opponent didn’t turn up in the previous round clash so he missed out on the chance to compete. He made the wait worthwhile on Sunday.
Other results saw Nick McQualter win 1 up on the last hole while Mitchell Dempster fought hard but lost 2 down.
Rhys Dempster came back courageously from 3 down to square his match while Jamie Asche finished on the 13th hole, winning 6 and 5.
Corey Porter backed up his 27 points in Wednesday’s twilight competition with a hard fought 1 up victory on the last hole.
In other news, the low markers of the junior group, Lee Belton and Sean Henderson attended a West Gippsland training course on the weekend, well done to both boys for that recognition.
Dylan-Jack Murphy leads the C Grade Club Championships after the first round so all in all a successful week for the young fellas.
The pennant team travel to Settlers Run this week for the final round.
