Teen’s beauty spot on

A PAKENHAM teen received a first place award in the recent Community College Gippsland (CCG) annual Hair and Beauty Competition.
Ashley Houston, 16, who attends Community College Gippsland, won the Free Expression Blow Waving category and was stoked about the win.
About 50 students studying Hair and Beauty at CCG’s Pakenham, Warragul, and Traralgon campuses competed in seven category events before an audience of more than 80 people.
Ashley said winning an award had increased her confidence after starting training at CCG in February this year.
“I started with very few skills and have learned so much. To now win an award against students from other campuses has increased my confidence and passion to do well.”
Students were given an hour to prepare their models and were then judged by an industry panel, comprising Gaetano Zammit of RPR Haircare, Deb Handley of De’ Koda Hair and Beauty Lounge, and International makeup artist Layla Stanton.
Mr Zammit said the quality of the hairdressing students’ work was outstanding, and noted the level of imagination and innovation. Ms Stanton also commented on the high standard of make up entries.
Emily Sullivan of Drouin won the Overall Competition Award for Beauty while Christopher Ahurir took out the Overall Award for Hairdressing, achieving the highest score of the day.
Other first prize winners are Danielle Burdett for Catwalk, Edna Sandford for Ladies Cutting, and Nicole Barret High Fashion Colour.
Tehmina Tanveer won Beauty Bridal Make Up, Kathy Dunning, Nail Art, and Asta Bennett, Fantasy Makeup.
Community College Gippsland manager, Laura Carson, said the awardees were high calibre students.
