Competition up on plain condition

THERE were fewer bullocks penned at VLE Pakenham this week in what was a smaller yarding overall.
More vealers were penned, along with a number of other young cattle, but some plainer condition cattle were among them.
Selling to similar competition demand was stronger for most of the young cattle, especially the light and medium weights.
Some sales were up to seven cents dearer with most being unchanged to five cents per kilogram higher.
Grown cattle sold to sluggish competition and were mostly two cents to four cents per kilogram lower.
More than 500 vealers were penned, and selling to stronger demand most made between 210 cents and 249 cents per kilogram.
The competition from feedlots and restockers was restricted, and some of the cattle purchased to feed-on averaged four cents lower from 190 cents to 221 cents per kilogram.
Five hundred and thirty yearling steers and heifers were penned, and some supplementary fed cattle sold from 215 cents to 229 cents, and most of the grass fattened steers 188 cents to 215 cents per kilogram.
Heifers averaged 10 cents per kilogram less, making mostly between 172 cents and 205 cents per kilogram.
Around 600 grown cattle were penned but the quality was mixed and fewer prime steers and bullocks were yarded.
The competition was more limited and grown steers sold to 194 cents, while prime bullocks made from 177 cents to 190 cents per kilogram.
Manufacturing steers sold anywhere between 145 cents and 178 cents per kilogram. Grown heifers sold from 146 cents to 176 cents, and a small number of cows made 129 cents to 145 cents per kilogram.
