By Danielle Galvin
PERSONAL trainer Emma Granieri is training hard for a 200-kilometre bike ride through the Yarra Valley.
The Pakenham woman is participating in The Ride to Conquer Cancer in October with her sister, niece and family friend.
They’ve called themselves The Rolling Stones.
“After my mum was diagnosed with cancer early last year, this has become a very important cause for me,” Ms Granieri said.
Each participant has to raise $2500 for the race. All proceeds go toward the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
“My mum was diagnosed with uteral cancer last year. She had a hysterectomy and then when she had another svan, they found it had moved to her lungs – she had secondary cancer,” she said.
After chemotherapy treatments and some debilitating side effects, Ms Granieri’s mum is doing well.
“She’s so positive and brave. I’m extremely proud of her,” she said.
“One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer. That’s a really scary statistic.”
Ms Granieri, a personal trainer, has been training hard to prepare herself for the rigorous ride through the Yarra Valley.
“I’m a personal trainer and I’ve been training at Pakenham Fitness Factory,” she said.
The ride runs over two days, and is on 27 and 28 October. Ms Granieri has been riding and doing cardio work-outs everyday.
So far she’s managed to ride for 50 kilometres each time she rides.
“It will be interesting to ride for 200 kilometres though!” she said.
