CARDINIA Waters lost its first game for the season on Saturday, 11 February, against fourth-placed Chadstone and this week faces a tough task to bounce back to form, against second-placed Mordialloc.
Win or lose, top place is still assured but the side needs a confidence-building victory for the following week’s first final.
Saturday’s away game was a dour, low-scoring affair with a 72-77 final score. Skipper John Van Vugt with Gunter Baumbach, John Cazaly and Wendy Titcombe won 22 to 13, and Bryan and Marion Stevens, Doug Richardson and John Hutchison also came away victorious, 23 to 14.
Skipper Lindsay Cameron, Charlie Borg, Brian Byrne and Bill Hite had a rare 15 to 25 loss, while David Blake, Mick Knight, Alan Brodie and Jim Barrie went down 12 to 25 and lost a vital six on the last end.
The midweek open team faced cold and windy conditions at home on Tuesday in their 86 to 58 win over Murrumbeena.
Brian and Marion Stevens, Beryl McFarlane and Stuart Tokely were the top rink, winning 35 to 14. Wendy Titcombe, Doug Richardson, Rae Richardson and Lindsay Cameron overcame a mid-game slump to win 31 to 17.
Fiona Samson, Anna Barrie, Pat Hutchinson and skipper Jim Barrie were behind all day on their rink, finally losing 20 to 27.
The team must now travel to Cranbourne and defeat the home side to retain top spot on the ladder.
