GARFIELD Bowling Club’s first and second teams have both moved closer to securing finals berths with big wins on Saturday.
Playing at home on Saturday, the Division 2 side outplayed Morwell and, despite losing on two rinks, won 97-90.
Gary Payne’s and Les Pumphrey’s teams led the charge with strong wins.
Individual scores: W. Goodman, R. Shaw, S. Oliver and S. Whyte (s) lost 21-27; P. Dawes, M. Shaw, T. Cleary and G. Payne (s) won 28-20; W. Gunton, R. Lamport, P. Leishout and S. Bassed (s) lost 20-22 and F. Prins, S. Gemmill, K. Rowland and L. Pumphrey (s) won 28-21.
The Division 5 side had a hard-fought tussle at Longwarry, running out 62-57 winners.
Bob Hope’s team starred with a string of contributions and came away 13-shot winners.
But Ken Tomlin’s side, regular winners this season, went down 21-12.
Individual scores: R. James, J. Lenders, L. Shatwell and R. Hope (s) won 28-15; K. Sainsbery, R. Charles, D. Knight and G. Asquith won 23-21 and A. Helmuth, J. Rose, A. Mentiplay and K. Tomlin (s) lost 21-12.
Rain washed out the Division 6 match at Morwell and with it the Garfield side’s finals chances, despite its late charge over recent weeks.
In Tuesday Pennant the Garfield ladies side recorded another strong win, 69-52 against Warragul, to secure second place on the ladder.
