Steely steers remain firm against price rise

A SMALLER yarding of 496 head at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, on Wednesday last week saw good competition as demand pushed prices upward.
All but one category lifted on average, with steers remaining firm on last week’s price.
Only the lighter steers held them back as the heavier end was regarded as dearer by four to five cents.
Bullocks averaged lighter but rose on average and heifers also averaged lighter but lifted.
Vealers were steady on weights with good rises in price.
Only 12 bullocks were offered and averaged two cents better at 168.4 cents, with a top similar to last sale at 184.6 cents.
Eighty one heifers rose nine cents to 172 cents and again followed last week’s top price at 210.6 cents.
Twenty six steers remained firm averaging 177.5 cents but the top lifted nine cents to 199.6 cents.
A total of 337 vealers saw an eight cent rise on average to 214.4 cents; the top vealer sale was five cents better at 247.6 cents.
Thursday proved no different as prices lifted for bulls, bullocks and cows alike.
Twenty two bulls averaged nine cents better, averaging 157.6 cents with 186.2 cents paid for the top sale.
This was seven cents up on last week.
Fourteen bullocks saw a 10 cents rise on average to 169.5 cents, making to 180 cents, 12 cents better.
Two hundred and seventy two cows rose six cents to 137.3 cents, with restockers paying to 222.6 cents and processors coming in at 165 cents.
