IT’S a UFO, it’s a spaceship … no, it’s just a meteor.
A meteor the size of a ping-pong ball was spotted 10.45pm on Sunday through the south-east.
It caused a bit of confusion among Cardinia Shire and City of Casey residents, with some swearing they saw a UFO. One commented on the Gazette Facebook page that it was “pretty weird” while another suggested it was a spaceship.
President of the Mount Burnett Observatory Perry Vhalos said the meteor came in from the west and was spotted in the balmy sky for about 20 seconds.
“Normally meteors are not much larger than grains of sand. This one was about the size of a ping pong ball or large marble,” he said.
“Being a bit larger than normal, it took a little longer to burn up.”
It was also spotted in Tasmania and the ACT.
“The meteor has burned up 90 kilometres which means it is visible from a large area,” he said.
Mr Vhalos said it had no connection to the meteor that was spotted in Britain.
