Police probe fatal crash

DETECTIVES interviewed a Pakenham man following a collision between a truck and car in which an elderly man was killed last week.
The incident occurred in front of the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre about 10.40am on Friday.
Investigators have been told that a truck was headed north on the South Gippsland Highway when it collided with an east-bound Ford sedan driven by the elderly man at the intersection of Lesdon Avenue.
Police said the truck continued in a north-easterly direction, crossing over the centre median strip and south-bound lanes.
It then entered a car park and collided with a parked car which had a boat hitched to it.
The car and boat were forced backwards and into a car that was passing behind. The motor of the boat went through the rear driver passenger window of the passing car. The occupant of that car was uninjured.
The driver of the Ford sedan, believed to be a local man in his seventies, died at the scene.
Advanced life support paramedic Kristiana Honey said they arrived to find the man in cardiac arrest in the car.
“There was extensive damage to the driver’s side of the car and the man was still in the vehicle,” she said.
“CFA were doing CPR and had attached an automatic defibrillator to the man. It was showing the man’s heart was in a rhythm that couldn’t be shocked with the defibrillator.
“We removed him from the car with the assistance of CFA and continued CPR.
“Unfortunately the man couldn’t be revived.”
The male driver of the truck was taken to the Dandenong Hospital suffering chest pain.
Detectives interviewed a 35-year-old man from Pakenham on Saturday and he was released pending further investigation.
Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
