Weak condition undermines prices

GOOD prices of late attracted extra head for last week’s yarding at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, where quality was mixed, effecting the lighter end.
Bullocks averaged heavier but some lacked condition which pulled the average back seven cents, although the top climbed five cents.
Heifers saw an easing in demand temporarily which saw their average slip 13 cents. Condition was fair as was quality.
Steers were marginally lighter and lacked pen lots for feedlotters and restockers to obtain sufficient line numbers.
This caused a slight reduction in the average of four cents.
Vealers had processors busy as quality was very good in the better pens.
This lifted the top price and saw a firm average price.
Sixty eight bullocks averaged 177.9 cents and topped at 200 cents, 69 heifers averaged 165.4 cents and topped at 205 cents, 125 steers averaged 183.3 cents and topped at 215 cents, and 398 vealers averaged 218.9 cents and topped at 260.6 cents.
Thursday’s bull and cow sale continued its usual good form with gains for all categories. Twenty three bulls rose three cents to average 158.9 cents and the top was seven cents better at 184.2 cents.
Forty five bullocks saw a 10 cent rise to average 178.3 cents while the top remained steady at 187.2 cents and 313 cows saw spectators pay to 219 cents for clean milky cows and processors paid up to 182.2 cents.
