Emerald Scouts and Guides hope to celebrate two major local scouting milestones in July next year with the unveiling of their hall’s upgrades.

EMERALD Scouts have won a five year battle to get their hall upgraded in time for its anniversary next year.
The State Government has provided $75,000 towards crucial repairs and Scout committee chairman Jeff Latter hopes it will entice community groups back to using the hall.
He said the scouts had started to receive negative comments from the local community about the run-down appearance of the hall, which was also facing a battle with graffiti.
The facility received a small upgrade in 1998 but the new government money will go towards a major renovation including restumping, roof replacement, changes to internal walls, a new kitchen, electrical upgrades, new toilets and a refurbished meeting room and main hall.
Mr Latter said the scouts committee had been searching for funds for an upgrade for the past five years and were “very pleased” with the government contribution.
“We’re now hoping for additional funds from the scouts,” he said.
Mr Latter estimated the full cost of the new upgrades would be around $130,000.
“We’re hoping the hall will be ready for the 90th anniversary of Scouts in Emerald and the 50th of the scout hall – both in July, 2013,” he said.
Mr Latter said the renovations would be a once in 50 year upgrade.
“We’re out there looking to engage the public as well,” he said.
“Community groups are free to use the facility.
“In the long run, we believe it will have a positive effect on numbers and encourage new members.”
In announcing the government funding, Gembrook MP Brad Battin praised Emerald Scouts and the group’s ability to help local youngsters develop new skills, make new friends and enjoy the outdoors.
“They deserve a good home base and it is clear that the hall has not had any major works done to it for a while,” he said. “This refurbishment will significantly improve the hall and I hope Emerald Scouts will continue to enjoy it for many years to come,” he said.
Chief Commissioner of Scouts Victoria Bob Taylor welcomed the funding.
“It is fantastic that the Victorian Government has recognised the importance and benefits of scouting and guiding in today’s society and are providing funding to assist us in upgrading our facilities across the state,” he said.
