PAKENHAM Football Club has a new king – seniors player Alex Considine was crowned Star News Group King at the Pakenham Racing Club’s Pakenham Guineas Day on Saturday.
Considine, 20, couldn’t have thought of a better way to celebrate his recent birthday than taking home the title and helping earn the Lions $5,000 prize money and a $2,500 Automatic Defibrillator Package from Defib Your Club For Life.
“Next year will be awesome with the club winning five grand,” Considine said.
“Don’t reckon I’ll see any of it, but they’ll put it to a good cause and I’m happy I got it for the club.”
The hardest vote accumulator for Considine he believes was his friend Jack Anning, who put in hard overtime doing the ring-arounds and getting work colleagues to vote for his mate.
“I’d have to say Jack Anning – he’s one of my best mates and he put in lots of work for me, getting everyone at work and family members helping get me votes,” Considine said.
When the Lions donned their traditional colours and bested ROC 15.16 (106) to 13.9 (87) in their round 10 heritage match, Considine said it stood out as the best moment of the season.
“Favourite memory would be beating ROC in the heritage round – was a big moment for the cub and was awesome to play in, there’s a lot of proud history at Pakenham.”
Considine wanted to thank his family, friends and his ‘second family’ at the Pakenham Football Club.
He won the prize on 556 votes ahead of Keysborough Golf Club’s Gerry Heenan (513 votes) and Poowong Football Club’s Adam Fisher (489).
