Berwick’s Show of strength

PROBABLY the one thing a Berwick Show Society president fears most is bad weather, really hot days or really wet days.
Hot days can be handled, although they are stressful for competitors, animals and patrons, but heavy rain, as we had on Saturday afternoon means, cancellation of many events.
Such was the intensity of Saturday’s rain that the president directed the gates to be closed at 6pm and the evening events, including the fireworks display, were cancelled.
Also, a newlook grand parade that took much planning was cancelled and this was a personal disappointment for the president.
That’s the down side.
Premier Steve Bracks, who officially opened the show, alluded to its proud history and congratulated those who created this tradition.
He said activity was dampened, but not the spirit that kept the show going year after year.
Mr Bracks has been told about these things, but I have over the years seen it all working and never fail to be amazed at the enormous amount of work that goes toward making this show a success.
Because that is what it was last weekend, a success, in spite of the weather.
Having two days set aside for the show meant that all was not lost.
Those who missed out on Saturday picked it up on Sunday.
Mr Bracks said ‘the show must go on’ and it will.
