House goes up in smoke

By Callan Date and Paul Dunlop
A HOUSE that almost went up in smoke last week is the focus of a police investigation.
It is believed the Pakenham house was being used for a marijuanagrowing operation.
Pakenham Detective Sergeant Phil Jury said police seized “certain items” found inside the house that will help with their investigations.
“At this stage it appears the cause of the fire was an electrical fault which was started from some sort of illegal wiring in the house,” Det Sgt Jury said.
“We are still trying to catch up with the occupants of the house at this stage to help us with our investigations.”
Fire fighters were called to the address in Gardenia Street last Thursday morning after a neighbour saw smoke billowing from the roof.
Pakenham CFA captain Vince Ingram said crews were able to stop the flames from spreading into the house after receiving the callout around 7.30 am.
At least 20 firefighters battled the fire, Capt Ingram said.
CFA units from Pakenham, Nar Nar Goon, Toomuc, Officer, Kooweerup and Berwick responded to the call.
A special breathing apparatus unit from Frankston and Springvalebased thermal imaging unit also attended.
Capt Ingram said firefighters used breathing equipment to combat thick smoke and initially had trouble getting at the flames.
CFA crews stayed at the scene for about three hours.
The house belonged to a wellknown local family for more than 40 years before it was sold late last year.
Det Sgt Jury asked for any neighbours who may know the whereabouts of the house occupants to contact Pakenham Police on 5941 1033.
