Demand improves as numbers rise

The Wednesday Fat Sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, saw increased numbers in the bullock, heifer and steer sections, with only a few less veal.
There were 100 extra head penned and demand remained improved with all categories recording a lift.
The bullocks averaged heavier with strong demand.
Extra heifers saw better competition, as did steers.
The vealer section saw strong interest from feedlotters, which carried on to the lighter end of the steer category.
The yard average was up 11 cents to 213 cents.
One hundred and forty six bullocks made to 242 cents, up 22 cents, and averaged 214.6 cents, up 12 cents; 135 heifers made to 233.6 cents, up six cents, and averaged 197.5 cents, up 20 cents; 108 steers made to 240 cents, up 15 cents, and averaged 204.6 cents, up eight cents, and 666 veal made to 260.6 cents, up eight cents, and averaged 218.3 cents, up nine cents.
A big jump in numbers for the Bull and Cow Sale on Thursday saw prices steady a little, with plenty of full pens for buyers to choose from.
Seventy seven bulls topped at 243.6 cents, up nine cents, and with some light quality head in the lighter section the average eased 10 cents to 186.9 cents.
Five hundred and forty six cows were penned and sold to a top of 198 cents, up eight cents and averaged 162.7 cents, which was firm on the previous week.
The Monday Calf Market saw 147 head penned with Friesian heifers making to $750, Jersey heifers made to $200, beef calves reached $205, and bull calves topped at $80.
