Schools invited to take walking bus

CASEY Council wants three new primary schools to join its walking school bus program.
The system involves children walking to school under supervision, rather than them travelling by vehicle.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford said there were already six primary schools in the program across Casey, and council has allocated $26,100 in 200607 for three additional schools.
He said the walking school bus idea was gaining in popularity.
“Not only does it teach children about traffic safety but it gives them healthy exercise at the same time,” he said.
“There is also less traffic congestion around schools, which means a safer environment and less pollution.
“Children and adults form new and positive relationships, and people begin to recognise that streets are safer to walk on,” he said.
The mayor asked parents to consider the opportunity of running the program at their schools.
