Water tanks turn on student awareness

PRESCHOOL children are learning to be water economists through a new City of Casey plan to install a water tank in each preschool.
Casey manager engineering and environmental services David Richardson said the water tank initiative was part of the council’s storm water education program. He said it would enable children to learn about water conservation firsthand.
“Sandcastles, mud pies and water buckets have always been part of children’s play time,” Mr Richardson said.
“Now their experiences using water tanks at preschool for their play activities will help them understand that water is a limited resource, which we have to use carefully.
“Preschoolers and the children at the Casey Childcare Complex have been fascinated to see a new water tank installed as part of their play area.
“Many are quickly catching on that if the water is wasted there will be no more to play with until the next rain.”
Mr Richardson said a licensed plumber was installing the water tanks and the feedback from preschools had been overwhelmingly positive.
“The introduction of water tanks is a great investment for the community, and the council will measure the success of the program both in terms of reduced water bills and an increase in the awareness of water conservation among the many young water users,” he said.
“The tanks are between 1300 and 2000 litres.”
