Garfield shows grit

GARFIELD Netball Club’s Agrade team ended the season with a strong preliminary final against Warragul at Moe on Saturday, finally going down by 16 goals.
Garfield was well prepared and went into the game with confidence and a determination to win and secure a grandfinal spot.
Jo Collis led the charge and accounted for her player from the onset, picking up vital interceptions and creating play and space within the midcourt.
Lisa Biffen was continually challenged by Warragul’s goal attack, but she maintained enough pressure within the first half of the match to enable Garfield to be in reach of victory.
Bess Henry, playing an inspirational game, created many passages of play and facilitated the delivery of the ball within the goal ring with speed and accuracy.
Bridget Soumilas battled hard and was under enormous pressure from the two Warragul defenders who hampered her normal freedom within the goal ring.
Susie Papley, once again, ran all game and was the vocal force behind the team. Julie Collis provided much needed fresh legs in the second half and gave the team a lift despite the final result.
Scores: Garfield 37 lost to Warragul 53.

B GRADE

The hot, sunny conditions played a pivotal role in the result of this match that saw Garfield go down to Drouin by 24 goals.
Both sides felt the heat as the temperature rose, but it was Drouin that used the injury time more effectively and provided fresh legs at important stages of the match.
Di Collis fought a valiant, defensive fight against a much taller opponent and if height was not an issue would have won the battle. She was well supported by Heath Mills and Casey Dawes who fought all game to close down the Drouin goalers.
Lisa Cowburn used her speed and defensive skills to have an impact on the wing attack.
Jess Marsh played a great game playing the front position and providing leads down the court when necessary. She also used her defensive skills to grab a few inspirational intercepts in the midcourt.
Despite the loss, the team played an outstanding season in a tough and competitive environment.
Scores: Garfield 34 lost to Drouin 58.
