Winter quality pressures market

There were approximately 680 export and 650 young cattle penned at VLE Pakenham, representing an increase of 400 head week-on-week.
There was a full field of buyers present and operating in a generally firm market. Quality was typical of a mid-winter yarding with most cattle showing the effects of the cold.
The limited selection of vealers suited to butcher orders sold firm with the odd dearer sale for better quality.
Yearling steers and heifers to the trade sold to firm demand, the heifer portion easing a few cents due to quality.
Grown steers and bullocks sold from firm to a few cents easier for the well covered lines with a greater proportion lacking finish and leaner drafts selling to a dearer average.
The vealers sold mostly from 280 cents to 344 cents per kilogram.
Yearling trade steers made between 286 cents and 338 cents per kilogram.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 268 cents and 335 cents per kilogram. Feeder steers made from 252 cents to 310 cents with the heifer portion from 260 cents to 290 cents per kilogram and most selling firm to five cents per kilogram easier.
Grown steers sold from 285 cents to 326 cents per kilogram.
Bullocks made between 285 cents and 322 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold between 236 cents and 254 cents with the crossbred portion between 240 cents and 302 cents per kilogram.
