Buyers take a rest

THERE were approximately 500 export and 580 young cattle penned representing an increase of 230 head week-on-week at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
There was a full field of buyers present but not all operating fully in a cheaper market off the back of last week’s highs.
Quality was plainer than the last sale with a rise in supply of secondary and plain light weights with little slaughter value.
The handful of well-finished vealers and yearling cattle suited to the trade sold to solid demand with most selling at similar averages but plainer quality resulting in some cheaper sales.
Well-bred young feeder cattle sold dearer in places with strong demand for Angus lines while the off-bred young cattle were harder to sell as a number were passed in.
Grown steers and bullocks slipped 10 cents to 15 cents for most while the better end of the grown steers eased only four cents.
Heavy weight crossbred manufacturing steers held firm.
Heavy weight vealers to butchers sold from 315 cents to 340 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 310 cents and 330 cents.
Yearling heifers suited to the trade sold between 285 cents and 334 cents.
Feeder steers made from 280 cents to 321 cents with the heifer portion from 255 cents to 312 cents.
Grown steers sold from 290 cents to 326 cents to processors.
Bullocks made between 300 cents and 308 cents for a limited selection.
Heavy weight grown heifers reached a top of 290 cents. Heavy weight crossbred manufacturing steers sold between 264 cents and 305 cents.
