Library honours diabetes efforts

THE Pakenham diabetes group has established a library in honour of a former Officer woman.
The Helen Sterk Memorial Library was officially launched at the group’s last meeting of the year.
Pakenham Diabetes Group president Bev Hind said the library was created after the family of Ms Sterk, a longtime diabetes sufferer who died several years ago, donated some money to the group.
“We received a donation and decided this would be the best way to use it,” Ms Hind said. “The library contains books and information about diabetes and is open to anyone.”
Ms Sterk’s family was represented by her granddaughter, Courtney Barnes, at the launch, which was attended by around 30 people.
The library will be open to anyone and will be located at the Uniting Church hall in James Street, open on the first Wednesday of every month at 10am.
The group is also selling a Christmas diabetes lowfat cookbook for $5 and an ordinary lowfat cookbook for $10 as part of its Christmas fundraising.
