Good stores push up prices

A TOTAL of 324 head were yarded on Wednesday last week for Baw Baw Livestock Exchange’s fat sale and among the pens were several lots of good stores which saw prices reach up to 410 cents per kilogram
The vealer section managed a top of 405 cents for processor calves, a larger number of bullocks sold to strong demand, average weights were slightly lighter but the better prices were more consistent with the extra numbers.
Steers and heifers both contained a bigger percentage of secondary head which pulled averages back in both categories, although the heifer section saw the better end lift with the top price up 30 cents.
This larger number of secondary head in turn resulted in a slight dip in the yard average on paper but the sale was regarded as dearer by agents.
This week’s yard average was 341.3 cents.
Twenty two bullocks made to 363.2 cents, back two cents and averaged 349.1 cents, up 18 cents, 62 heifers made to 383.2 cents, up 31 cents, and averaged 304.9 cents, back seven cents.
Fifty five steers made to 362 cents, back 17 cents, and averaged 313.5 cents, back 35 cents, 178 veal made to 405 cents, up six cents, and averaged 354.8 cents, up four cents.
Thursday’s sale contained 90 less head but there was no less demand as 29 bulls topped at 317.2 cents and averaged four cents better at 270.8 cents, and with 471 cows penned bidding was brisk as the top made to 332.2 cents and cows averaged 11 cents up at 246.1 cents.
The week’s yard average lifted 10 cents to 248.1 cents.
The draw for 24 and 25 August is: 1, SEJ; 2, Scotts; 3, Gibbon; 4, Landmark; 5, Elders.
